Before the advent of formal language human beings utilized the art of drawing as a method of communication. Various mathematical processes were becoming a reality as the artisan’s linear qualities became more complex. However these lines were expressed overwhelmingly in hieroglyphic forms or other cryptic etchings on the surfaces of earthen elements. The development of lines of precise quality was a later development and emerged with the manufacture of the measuring tool or the straight edge. Exactly what the early geometric forms meant is open to speculation however it is believed that this primitive practice served to map location of stars to navigate and compress distances among hunter-gatherer nomadic groups.

To doodle is an act of the drawing, to write a letter or to jot down ideas onto a tablet of paper or any choice surface, is to engaged in drawing. The act of drawing is quite important, so much so, it is second nature to to human function.

That lines are important for the sake of lines only, that this is insignificant to the process of painting, its media or the art that may be drawn out from its basic structural surface notwithstanding. To create an artwork especially painting, the idea is to be borne out or come to fruition whereon the concept of the image or lack of one communicates a color precedence negative or positive. Painting I often think of as having similar approach to a craftsmanship behavior as the sculptor exercises with his/her work. In painting ,the object of visual impact may return a negative or positive value that adds and subtract from the core element of a work itself, this behavior may be idiosyncratic by nature as it is secondary. The idea of a secondary disposition adds handily to a concept of modeling that I often refer to as a ‘condition of collective history’ through which the evolution of an artwork may slowly emerge. This approach becomes the artistic synthesis of creative license, one of experience and theory that comes with the artist maturity. Artistic promotion revolves around a metamorphic correlative interpretation, of imagery, iconography and meaning.

Enter some ragtag punkers with instruments and we all had a good time, but don’t forget to draw something in the bar’s journal.

Drawing on found card

In the halcion years of artist lofts and Als Bar on Traction 1975-1990, good things happened, there were such bursts of energy and art-making; t’was enough fuel to create another sun. All good things however has an end. The art district as was known is now rudderless, it is perhaps safe to say it is quite-dead.
